How to Watermark Photos for Etsy (Without Hurting Sales)

If you sell on Etsy, your product photos are your storefront — and they're also the first thing competitors and dropshippers copy. A stolen listing photo lets someone sell your product (or a knockoff) with zero effort. The fix is watermarking, but done wrong it makes your shop look unprofessional and suppresses conversions. Here's how to get it right.

Why Etsy sellers watermark (and what Etsy says)

Etsy allows watermarks on listing photos, with one practical warning: the first photo is what appears in search results and social previews. A heavy watermark on photo #1 can reduce click-through. The standard playbook: keep photo #1 clean, watermark photos #2 through #10, which carry the detail shots people steal.

The three rules of sellable watermarks

1. Put your shop name or domain, not "do not copy"

A watermark is free advertising when it carries something findable. yourshopname.etsy.com or your standalone domain beats an angry warning every time — a reposted photo then works as an ad pointing back to you.

2. Corner placement, 50-65% opacity

Bottom-right or bottom-left, small (3-5% of image width), semi-transparent. Buyers' eyes should slide past it; copiers can't crop it without cutting the product. Use our watermark photo tool to dial in exactly these settings.

3. Tile only for proof galleries, never for listings

Tiled watermarks (repeating across the whole image) are unbeatable protection, but they scream "stock preview". Use them for mockups you post publicly before launch, or client proof galleries — not on the photos that are supposed to sell.

Step-by-step

  1. Export your product photos at full size (2000px+ on the long edge).
  2. Open the watermark tool and set your text: shop name or domain.
  3. Size 4%, white, 60% opacity, bottom-right corner. Check it on your busiest, brightest photo — if it vanishes on white backgrounds, switch to dark gray.
  4. Download, then repeat with identical settings for the rest of the shoot — or do the whole batch at once with bulk watermarking.
  5. Upload to Etsy: photo #1 clean, photos #2+ watermarked.

Frequently asked

Will a watermark stop all theft?

No watermark stops a determined thief with an inpainting tool. But it stops the casual copy-paste that makes up the vast majority of listing-photo theft — and it makes stolen photos traceable back to you.

Logo or text?

Logo looks more professional if you have a clean transparent PNG — see add logo to photo. If not, plain text works perfectly. Never stretch a low-res logo to fit; blurry marks hurt more than they protect.
